Brief Information

Located in the heart of Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum is one of Ghana’s most important landmarks. The site serves as the final resting place of Ghana’s first President and great Pan-Africanist, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Within the park, visitors can explore a museum that preserves rare artefacts from Ghana’s independence era, offering deep insights into the nation’s history and the broader struggle for freedom in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The History

The  Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Accra stands on the historic Polo Grounds, where Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957, with the words “Ghana is free forever.” The site, once the gathering place for thousands who witnessed this moment, has since become a national monument honoring Ghana’s first President.
